Frequently Asked Questions for

Visiting California Woodland Institute

What should I wear to my session?

For your safety and comfort, we recommend:
Closed-Toe Shoes: Sturdy shoes such as boots or sneakers are required when working around horses. Sandals or open-toed shoes are not allowed.
Comfortable Walking Shoes: Many sessions include movement through outdoor spaces, so wear shoes suited for walking on uneven terrain.
Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Sessions take place outdoors, so dress in layers and wear clothing suitable for the season. In warmer months, a hat and sunscreen are recommended, and in cooler months, bring a jacket.
Avoid Loose or Dangly Items: Jewelry, scarves, and loose clothing can get caught or become a distraction during equine sessions.

What happens if my session is canceled due to weather?

Since many of our sessions take place outdoors, extreme weather conditions (heavy rain, strong winds, extreme heat, or wildfire risks) may lead to rescheduling.

  • We will contact you as early as possible if your session needs to be rescheduled or moved to an alternative location.

  • In the case of mild weather (light rain, cold, or wind), we will still hold the session unless conditions become unsafe.

  • If you have concerns about the weather on the day of your session, please reach out before traveling to confirm.

What should I bring to my session?

Water Bottle: Hydration is important, especially in warm weather.
Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for sunny days.
Notebook or Journal (Optional): Some clients find it helpful to take notes or reflect after their session.
Any Personal Items You Need for Comfort: Such as layers for warmth or bug spray if needed.

Where do I park and check in?

Upon arrival, follow the posted signs to our designated parking area.

A staff member will meet you and guide you to your session location. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to allow time for parking and settling in

Are there restrooms available?

Yes! We have a portable restroom on-site for client use. If you prefer, please plan accordingly before your visit.

Can I bring a friend, partner, or family member to my session?

Individual sessions are designed for one-on-one work, but if you would like a partner or family member to attend, please discuss this in advance with your therapist.

  1. Couples and family therapy sessions are available for those wanting to work together in a structured session.

  2. Observers or guests who are not participating in therapy are not permitted in sessions.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us before your session. We are happy to help you prepare and ensure you have a meaningful, safe experience at California Woodland Institute.
